Jakarta, 5 April 2021 - Ramadan is a sacred month for Muslims worldwide, and every country has its tradition of celebrating the holy month. Although Ramadan this year will not differ from last year as the pandemic has not over yet, it shouldn’t make it less unique and less solemn.
Here are five tips that you can follow to maximize your Ramadan experience ethically and environmentally responsible:
Cut Waste
We tend to overconsumption during Ramadan as there will be a lot of seasonal food, mainly traditional food that brings the nostalgic feeling and hard to resist. But remember that God advises Muslims to avoid waste:
“O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship. Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not like the wasteful.” - Surah Al Araf [QS 7:31]
Unplug
Ramadan encourages a less materialistic lifestyle and focuses more on spirituality, does more sunnah prayer, recites & khatam (finish) the Quran, reads more, etc. So it is a good time to unplug from gadgets, that will also help saving energy by cutting the electricity usage.
Declutter
Try to clean your home and start fresh as you are cleansing your mind and body during Ramadan. Clear out and donate things you no longer use to a trusted organization.
Buys Local Product and Reduce the Single-use Plastic
Empowered local producers buy from them, and don’t forget to bring your reusable bag to reduce the usage of single-use plastic.
Reduce Carbon Footprint
Try car-free for short trips, like when we go to the mosque, car-pooling to work if possible and all the four above!
Ramadan Kareem for everyone, and may you have a blissful Ramadan ahead.
